Functional Conditioning Program
What is the Functional Conditioning Program?
A Functional Conditioning Program is a 10-week tailored exercise program designed to improve an individual’s ability to perform daily and work-related activities. The program focuses on developing strength, mobility, stability, and endurance through movements that reflect real-world tasks rather than isolated muscle exercises.
Musculoskeletal injuries can negatively affect an individual’s productivity in the workplace, as well as their personal wellbeing, which is why it is imperative to monitor functional capacity and implement preventive measures where possible.
These movements typically involve multiple muscle groups working together to enhance overall function. For example, squatting (sitting and standing), lifting, bending, reaching, and walking. The goal is to condition the body for everyday activities, helping reduce the risk of injury and enhance overall physical performance in work, life and sport.
Why incorporate a Functional Conditioning Program in your health and safety strategy?
Integrating a Functional Conditioning Program (or work hardening program) into your organisation’s health and safety strategy offers significant benefits, including:
Who is Bodycare’s Functional Movement Screen best suited to?
As an individualised program, the exercise prescription is tailored to each participant’s assessment results, injury history, work duties, and personal goals. Exercises are also adapted to suit lifestyle factors and available equipment.
The program is generally not recommended for individuals with current or pre-existing injuries, those on return-to-work plans, or those with open claims.
Program details
Program duration: 10 weeks
Maximum participants: Up to 30 participants per program
Each participant in the standard Functional Conditioning Program completes:
- Initial Assessment: A face-to-face evaluation to establish a baseline for strength, mobility and function, and to identify individual goals. This forms the foundation for a personalised program.
- Two Review Sessions: Conducted face-to-face to monitor progress, adjust exercises and ensure continual improvement.
- Final Reassessment: A concluding assessment to measure progress and establish future goals beyond the program.
Participants also receive a starter pack containing basic exercise equipment, including resistance bands and a spikey ball, to support their training both during and after the program.

Functional Conditioning Program FAQs
-
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) was a one-time assessment used to identify movement dysfunctions and risk factors.
The Functional Conditioning Program (FCP) is our version of the FMS. It’s a comprehensive 10-week solution. It is a structured, professionally supervised training program that addresses those movement weaknesses and builds the physical resilience needed to meet job demands safely. The FCP uses an assessment as its first step to build the personalised plan.
Moving beyond a simple functional assessment, Bodycare’s Functional Movement Screen has been replaced with the Functional Conditioning Program (FCP) to deliver targeted, long-term physical conditioning for your team.

The return on investment (ROI) is realised through several key business metrics:
- Reduced Absenteeism: A physically conditioned workforce is less prone to injury, leading to fewer sick days and lost time.
- Lower Claim Costs: Proactive prevention reduces the frequency and severity of musculoskeletal injuries, impacting your workers’ compensation premiums.
- Increased Productivity: Employees who are stronger and more focused on their physical health are more energetic, resilient, and productive during their shifts.

No, the Functional Conditioning Program is a strictly proactive service.
It is designed for workers who are currently healthy and active. It is not recommended for employees with current injuries, pain, open workers’ compensation claims, or those currently on a formal return-to-work (RTW) plan. For those scenarios, we recommend our Treatment & Management services, which include:
-
All FCPs are delivered under the supervision of our qualified Allied Health Professionals (such as Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists). Their expertise ensures:
- Each exercise is safe and appropriate for the individual’s current capacity.
- Correct technique is taught and maintained to maximise results and prevent training injuries.
- The program continuously progresses for optimal long-term results.
The program is ideally suited for asymptomatic (non-injured) employees in roles with high physical demands, such as manual handling, repetitive tasks, or prolonged static postures.
